Level and Experience[]

The character's level is a value between 1 and 11 and measures experience in battle. Characters rise in levels as they gain experience and are able to increase their attributes and gain perks that make them better at the mercenary profession.
Level Total XP
needed
2 200
3 500
4 1000
5 2000
6 3500
7 5000
8 7000
9 9000
10 12000
11 15000

As mercenaries fight and gain experience they will level up. With each level your brothers gain they receive a perk point and can increase three different attributes.

The introduction of "Veteran Levels" allows mercenaries to level even farther than level 11. Every level above 11 (= Veteran Level) requires 4000+1000*(current_lvl-11) XP and there is NO perk point awarded and the stat rolls are reduced to a maximum of +1 for three stats. The actual maximum level is 33 (before DLC "Warriors of the North" it was 42).

Attributes can be divided into two different categories:
  • Primary Attributes can be increased each level by 1-4 points, depending on a character's talent
    • Melee Skill
    • Melee Defense
  • Secondary Attributes can be increased each level by 2-5 points, depending on a character's talent
    • Ranged Skill
    • Ranged Defense
    • HP
    • Fatigue
    • Resolve
    • Initiative (3-6 points)

Some recruits with military backgrounds may already have a few levels under their belt. If you hire a brother who already has one or more levels, you can distribute his perk points and stat roll level ups after you hired him as you do with a normal mercenary.

Combat XP[]

A character who dealt the killing blow gets 20% of the XP gained from the enemy. The other 80% is distributed equally among the combat party members.[1]
If a Wardog kills an enemy, the XP reward is divided evenly among the combat party brothers.

Some other factors affect the amount of experience points gained in battle:

  • The 'Beginner' combat difficulty grants +10% Experience bonus for every character.
  • Training Hall services boost the experience gain for a few battles.
  • Potion of Knowledge gives +100% Experience increase in the next 3 battles and The King in Chains potion provides a permanent +20% Experience boost.
  • Character trait Bright increases experience gain by +10% Experience, while Dumb characters are penalized by -15% Experience.
  • Student perk grants additional 20% Experience. At the eleventh character level (or at the seventh character level for Indebted when playing the Manhunters origin) the perk becomes inert.
  • Some character backgrounds have different modifiers: an Apprentice has +10% Experience and a Mason has +5% Experience innate boost, whereas a Wildman has -15% Experience penalty.
  • Manhunters origin specific rule: any overseer (non-indebted) earns 10% Experience less, while any Indebted earns 10% Experience more.
